Jesus before Christ?

What is this site about and why should I care?

Before there was an institution called the church there was a remarkable man we now call Jesus. For more than twenty centuries the instutution has been heavily invested in what people should believe about Jesus; sometimes in the process losing sight of what Jesus taught or did.

This study seeks to draw close to -- inasmuch as it is possible -- the original, authentic teachings of the first century rabbi, Jesus. This is not a formal curriculum; it is a journey of exploration. It is not designed for scholars, but for everyday people. We don't claim to know it all, nor is it our desire somehow to "infuse" you with our particular learnings. Should you choose to join us on this pilgrimage your learnings will be your own. And we hope you will share them with the rest of us.

What do we mean when we use the phrase "Jesus before Christ?" Simply that Jesus lived and taught as a faithful Jew to the end of his life. He did not want to start a new religion; he made no claims to be "King of kings" or "Son of God." He never spoke against any other religion. What he did want to do was to show people how to live authentic human lives in closeness to God. He did this by teaching through parables, beatitudes and sayings; through miracles and, most powerfully, through the example of his own life.

Whatever you may think about the church, and even if you reject it outright, we believe the wisdom and compassion of the man, Jesus, is worth considering. If you think so too, we're happy to have you share the journey with us.
